i would go with the bush thicknee an aussierealtive of the stone curlew

they are crepuscular, so they would be about in the late evenings and early morning while it is still dark
they are a threatened species it seems

Clive And Gumnut are both correct. It is a ' Bush Stone Curlew ' sometimes called a ' Bush Thick Knee '
but always called ' Burhinus grallarius '

A wildlife expert here in Brisbane, Ric Nattrass, helped solve it for me when I emailed him the improved photo.
