thought i'd take the 500mm tak out today as it was a beutiful day. i figured i'd try for some inflights while panning. i'd found a new spot where there was plenty of action if you just waited. anthow i shot about 60 shots. seems like i need a lot more practise at this. sheesh, just finding something in the VF is hard enough much less tracking them and i'm shooting from about 60 meters.. i got plenty inflight shots but all but one went to the RCBin.

I can't imagine trying to manual focus on the flying bird, using a prime lens at 500mm!:OEven with my 70-300, when I am zoomed to the max, so often I lose the target and have to zoom out to find it again. Anyways, good job with the sea gull. Practice makes perfect.

I can never manage in flight shots. Lately have some luck with steady shots only. You are talking about F16, shutter at least 1/300s (?)if not 1/500 & iso 800. The ambient light has to be very very bright indeed. AF lens may not help you though. It is faster to do that manually. Thanks for sharing your great work.

Look at it this way - you got one really nice one and your others at least have the bird in them. When I was trying to take pictures of flying seagulls I got quitea few of the pier without much more than a tail feather disappearing behind it! And that was with only a 300mm lens - I can't imagine trying to do it with a 500mm!

Hey Roy, that is what the gun sights are for on the top of the lens. That is one big boat to swing around for flying birds.

The gul looks nice.
