Went back to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve today. I brought my friend Danny there to try out his new nikon 70-300 VR. It seemed like a slow day for the birds. Not as much action as the last time I went, but the weather was nice and we got some good shots nonetheless. If I have missed identified any of the birds, let me know.

This was the only pelican sighting today. Hope they haven't migrated off somewhere.

Bagged my first osprey.

I'm kinda ambivalent about this pic of a flying snowy egret. Not the best focus on it's head and body, but its wings and feathers came out well.

A small group of stints. They seemed quite relaxed and allowed me to get in close.

I believe this is a Whimbrel.

This seagull got perturbed when the pelican crashed it's party on the chain fence. It would circle around the pelican and sqawk.

royce, you out did yourself. these are great and i see you've learned to sharpen. i also think your copy of the 70-300 may be 1 in a 1000. i never got results with mine that compared with these.. you also seem to have a good variety of subjects for this time of year. i also hope your nikon friend doesn't feel to bad. i'd like to see some images from his N* 70-300VR compared to yours.

Thanks Roy! My friend Danny uses the Nikon D80 with the new Nikon 70-300 VR f4-56. It was an interesting comparison because we basically both shot the same subjects essentially. I was actually VERY impressed with his shots. He had alot more keepers than me. He also didn't have to do alot of post processing with them. Here's the link.

Really impressive! Looks like a great place to hang out, especially with such a nice lens. You do SO well with it - I'm really impressed. Maybe worth a day trip, or would it be too far for me?

Really enjoyed these, Royce. Very impressive. Thanks for posting.

Thanks. How far are you from orange county? Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is between Huntington Beach and Seal beach. I think it would make for a fun day trip. Afterwards you could hang out at Huntington beach, eat, people watch, and walk around.

Actually, I'm very happy about his pictures...I look GREAT in them!

I'll tell you one thing, royce gets twice as many keepers of the flyers. This one, in particular, is what many of my shots looked like. It's a seagull that buzzed by us...

If you want to see the rest, I can probably post them. I think I got6 more just like this one. Thank goodness for burst mode!
