I was down by the river waiting for a yacht when this fellow needed a portrait taken.

phil,
this would have been a lot better if the whites were not blown. in the 'settings' menu set the ''bright portion'' to 'on'. any blown hilites will be flashing black and you can adjust your exposure from there. it works real fine if you are shooting on manual. or in AV so you can adj the ev to+ or- ...

Looks like you have a bit of dust on your sensor. It shows up on the blue parts of the photo. If you have photoshop, you can use the clone tool to smooth those over.

It wasn't an exposure problem.

When I went back and looked at the original I realised I had been too aggressive with the levels and curves, probably looking at the histograms rather than the image.
