Since the subject of an upcomingupdate to the K10 came up, along with thepossible banding issue (is it real or not?), I thought (since I am home sick with some sort of nasty bug) that I'd do some comparison shots. These aren't terribly interesting pictures, since I'm not venturing too far, but thought thisduck would be better than a pen holder. I was also interested to see if shooting with bright or natural made any difference.

All of the pictures were taken with either 1600 or (in the case of the K100) 3200. I got smart this time with the K10 and shot in raw+jpg, so the raw and jpg versions are the same picture - I took two at natural and two at bright, one a little closer to the other. The only light source was hazy natural light (almost cloudy but not quite) through double pane windows (no artificial light on in the room), so I took the cloudy setting and manually adjusted it so the sample lookedas closeto the duck as I could get(discovered that the white balance on my non-calibrated monitor is close, but not quite the same, as the camera). I used a SMC M 50mm 1.7 stopped down to about 2.8 (wanted a relatively small DOF), so I'd have lots of dark OOF parts to the shot, as well as sharp, infocus lighter parts.

K10 ISO 1600 Natural. Both of these two shots are the jpg versions and the only thing done to them has been to resize (100% crops coming later).

K10 raw natural (I type slowly - this takes a while to do).

Just looking at the resized pictures, my opinion would be that the K100 is better at 1600, but not by much. The K100 at 3200 is poorer than I would use unless I was really desperate.

Where the differences are is much more apparent when you look at 100% crops from these pictures. These have not been resized, just cropped from the original pictures above. The only pp I did at all was to use ACR to convert the K10 raw files. I didn't quite match the white balance as you can see above.
