Wow great shots man. The 3rd one is phenomenal.
I see you have expanded the idea of shooting birds at close range. I believe you have a lot of misshoots because you have very thin DoF.
In my case I use 16mm and prefocus.
While I saw the woodpecker hovering around to land on my hand, I was stuck with a 300mm lens in my K100D. I put back the tele and bring out my DL with the 16mm. That was about it.
If you have some lens around 16 -30mm and focus to a distance of say 3-8 ft, you will have a lot more keepers if you position yourself amongst them.
Seagull , chickadee , pigeon.....would be a lot easier to practice.

With FA28mm2.8



I hardly had the light I need as it is a dense conservation area. To take BIF , you need ample light for that .
And in your case with around 200mm and very thin DoF, it is really difficult to get a good fast action shot like what you have. I cannot do that.
