name me as simply as possible what are the best macro lenses on the market. They shouldent break the bank so like under 400$ or like 300£ thanks in advance

and also is the
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro (Pentax AF)a macro lens like what can create 1:1 extreme closeups or do i need to invest in a specialised macro lens for that?

i doubt the zoom will do 1:1 macro by itself. to tell the truth just about any of the 1:1 macros made by any company will satisfy you. i have a vivitar105f2.5. it's about 25 years old and it'll match any modern lens produced. 140usd delivered BIN ebay. read up, do a search here. gawd knows , it's been discussed enough..

Though personally unless you are majorily into microscopic shots AND at very close range....

1:1 is a bit over rated IMHO.... many zooms even 300mm (like the SIGMA 70-300mm) will do 1:2 and at a distance you aren't going to scare off a live subject like a butterfly (or shadow it with out also a macro flash )

> than that like 1:3 or 1:4 is wholely another matter... but 1:2 really isn't all that bad.

Again unless you want to make microscopy a specialty and with mostly static/inanimate subjects.

i found the sigma70-300 very difficult to use handheldas a 1:2 macro simply because of the length of the lens and the shooting distance from subject. the more length of each mutiplies any movement. i got some good results but not as many as using a dedicated macro lens. to me, IMO, off camera flash is almost a must.

right thanks, yeah the problem is with the 75:300 you can only activate the macro at the long end. With the 17-70mm 2.8 (the discussed to death one) has a macro function so im assuming that would take adquate macro's?

probably not the greatest example, but here is a macro shot with my tamron 70-300 with the 1:2 macro. this was taken hand held with my k10 with shake reduction turned on. no post processing, this is not a crop just resized for here.
