And to intrepidwalker and Catbells - don't worry since Pentax does not support a codec for XP or Vista - you will not see PEF thumbnails when viewing folders. If I was looking to buy a new camera (a first timer say) and I had just purchased a Vista computer (ok rich first timer) I would check to see what features my new computer would support and what cameras were supported. I would find out that, C*non, N*kon, M*nolta, S*ny, Olym*usand Fuj* fully supported viewing features without having to purchase additional software - or using the "lame" software supplied by the camera vendor.
Did I say I was worried, I don't think so- I've managed just fine without worrying about whether of not I can view RAW images under an operating system.

From what I've seen of uSofts previous attempts to incorporate additional features into their operating systems to encourage people to upgrade i.e CDROM burning - it's been pretty pathetic - some might even say 'lame'.
"Jack of all Trades, Master of None", springs to mind.

I got pointed to a program which allows me to view PEF files in explorer, and it works very well. Only trouble is, I don't really use it! I always browse in CS2.

Maybe if MS dropped the photoviewer, or left it viewing jpeg, then things would be fine. After all, if you are playing with RAW files, then you should be using a proper third party piece of software, no the OS.

Just had to bring this bad - bare with me:

On the Microsoft site

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...toinfofaq.mspx

you will find

A.

RAW codecs are available direct from camera manufacturers' websites, and may also be included in software provided with future cameras. Nikon has released version 1.0 of its codec, which can be found on the Nikon Imaging website.
For information about the availability of codec's for other RAW file types, please see the following links:

Adobe:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=dng

Canon:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0...ir.asp?EXT=cr2

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=crw

Fujifilm:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=raf

Minolta:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=mrw

Olympus:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=orf

Sony:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0...ir.asp?EXT=arw

Lists all Vendors that intend to support WIC (guess who is missing) - it starts with P and ends in x. I followed these links and found out that S*ny and Oly*pus are the only ones with codec's for download --- but wait there is more. -- drum roll please --

I followed the N*kon link --- and low and behold I find this:

Ver.1.0.1 changes
 • Updating an NEF file's meta-data in Explorer no longer prevents some third-party applications from opening that file afterwards. [/*]
 • When the downloaded file is double-clicked, it is expanded and the software automatically installed all at once. [/*]
It appears that NIKON has "fixed" its codec. ----- Hummm ----- Not a line of MS code was changed.

Sorry Charlie - the bug was with N*kon -

However us Pentax dudes are left out -- Microsoft does not even list them as a vendor.

The bug is with Microsoft for once again putting out a feature that is not fully functional and then blaming others for not fixing it.

If the feature doesn't work 100%, don't include it!

ACR now supports K10D RAW PEF files.

I beg to differ. The codec written and delivered by N*kon corrupted N*kon files. N*kon removed the codec (v1.0) from their site and with Microsoft provided a workaround. N*kon released a new codec (v1.0.1 referenced above) and the corruption issue is resolved. Please tell my why this is a Microsoft issue. The codec's from Olym*us and S*ny (supplied by the vendor) did not exhibit corruption of their respective proprietary formats. - It was a N*kon issue.

Again - Microsoft did not change a single line of code in WIC, .Net framework or office 2007to accomplish this - this issue was a N*kon issue from the outset. The default codec's written by Microsoft for bmp, tif, jpg etc. work as advertised - no corruption.

I am using ACR in both Elements 5.0 and Lightroom - works great - but that is not what I want. I want to be able to download my PEF files on to a machine that does not have Elements, Lightroom, Pentax Photo Browser, etc. and look at them in explorer as thumbnails natively. I mean no third part application (the computer in question is the one I have at work - no Photoshop, Pentax, PSP or any other photo software). It would be sweet to be able to use the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to start off a slide show. But here is the kicker - since Pentax does not have - or appears to not be trying to create - a codec, the whole point is moot at least for me and PEF's.

Maybe I should go to a pawn shop and buy an old Macbook - then I could do it.
