There are 28 (or so) Telesor 52mm reverse rings for the "pooman's macro" available on eBay. (from the Henrys.ca ebay store)

http://cgi.ebay.com/TELESOR-52mm-REV...item2971980028

I've drooled over the macro shots since joining this group, so I though this might be a good way of experimenting.

Any thoughts on the ring? I was thinking of buying one to try out the 18-55 kit lens. I think the same seller has several 49mm available as well.

Cheers,
Geoff (lurker no more)

I don't think this will work on the kit lens due to lack of an aperture ring.

Correct. You can, however, shoot wide open with the kit lens, but not much DoF.

A reversing ring was what I bought first, and matched it with a cheap 55mm screw lens.

As you don't need to mount the lens on the camera, just pick a cheap one from ebay with an aperature ring.

Another way to get decent macros is by buying a cheap 2x or 3x auto-apertureteleconverter and remove the glass to make an extention tube. You can pick upan offbrand2x or 3x teleconverter on eBaycheaper than you can pick up extention tubes.

i've got a set of diopters i'll sale for 15usd shipped in the CUSA.

i've gotten amazing results using a 50mm reversed. for a ring i took and bored a hole in a twist in body cap and glued a adapter ring to it. works great.

i also took a rear lens cap and did the same so i can add accessories to the rear/front of the lens. be careful as the rear coatings on the lens is not near as hard as those on the front lens. as stated the kit lens would not give ,to me, acceptable results.

if you set a small apeture in Av mode, turn the camera off and dismount the lens, the lens should be stopped right down when its off the camera, and you can use a finger to move the apeture diaphragm lever

If you don't have one yet... you might look into the economical SIGMA 70-300mm lenses.
Beside the obvious purpose, they are also macro...

Not 1:1, but does do a very decent 1:2 macro and at a distance you don't have to be on top of something that might bite or be scared away.
