Those are quite remakable at an effective 1000mm+ (TC plus crop factor)

Free hand held or were you using some bracing or tripod? Even if tripod it couldn't have been locked down for the BIF shots.

technique with these big glass monsters is what it's about. i get a little better each time out. these are all tripod shot. the gull shots were with the lens locked down and focused on the pier. wired remote. just wait for the shot to develope and shoot bursts. the pelican(almost) was shot while panning on the tripod. it's the first pan i shot that's almost right.

still interestd if someone has used the head i linked to?? and thanks for looking.

Impressive reach! What kind of a reaction do you get from folks when they see you with such a large contraption?? Must trigger serious Lens Envy!! Jay

actually not much. if another serious photog is around we usually talk but i guess it intimidates the curious.. their loss as i'm always ready and friendly. of course looking like charles manson doesn't help i'm sure. next week we'll try the 2x with the 1.4x.
hmm, 1400mm.. crop factor, 2100mm, 42x, lol

And considering effectively 1000mm+ really quite good.

That is the thing I like about 1.4 TC's... a decent boost but other than under stop F impact... they tend to be virtually transparrent... even some inexpensive ones like the Tamron 1.4x.
