Might I suggest moving to a point near the edge of the track and beyond the hurdle soyou are shooting backat it. Capturing them close to head on, pre-focus on the hurdle and then wait for them to get to the hurdle before making your shot.

That should aleviate the decapitations and focussing...hopefully.
