Hi all technical people.

Just had an ebay lens delivered. Vivitar 75-205mm. All pretty with clean glass, but the aperture is not working properly. The lever is very stiff and doesn't have full travel.

The only way to change the aperture to the lens setting is to push the lever quite hard. The iris blades look slighty out as well when opened wide.

Any advice on taking the lens apart is welcome, including a difficulty rating.

I know I could send the lens back, but no point in paying postage, plus it came with a nice camera case.

Looking forward to replies.

if the lens was incorrectly described then i always demand they pay return postage . if with paypal start a dispute. i've got two lenses and refunds. they said 'throw the lens away. what's your serial number?? the 75-205 is an excellent lens. it also has a matched 2x mutiplier.

Sounds like the lubricating grease broke down and oil got onto the aperture blades. I have some with a similar problem, they have all been very cheap ebay purchases and I just decided to hang onto them and maybe get them fixed. I did learn to always ask about the aperture blades, though.

This is a link to disassembly instructions for a different lens. It does give an idea of the steps involved though. If you are handy you might tackle it yourself. Personally, I am not that brave.

darren,
all i keep reading is that the zooms are very hard to work with. i've got some info on fixing a couple of mine and have been collecting the tools required. i've also dismantled two. well, i kept some of the parts. hehe
i'll not try again until i know more.. i don't think this is something for the faint of heart.

tim,

that's a link i have also. it's also good for the 28-105mm as it has a similar build. probably for the kiron/vivitar 28-90 and the 28-70 as well.
i've got 2 , 28-105s that have haze in them. still haven't gotten brave enough to do anything to them. fortunately my 28-85 is fine.
