I use a couple of techniques...

I prefocus at a spot and then trigger the shutter when the participant crosses the spot, and I just focus and shoot. I never use burst mode--all of mine are single shots. If the light gets low, I switch to "Moving object Mode" and this uses continuous focus. The continuous focu seems to be less successful for me--more out of focus shots.

Big meet today (Saturday). True team scoring against some of the best teams in Southern Minnesota. Too bad we were rained out after about eight events. 7th grade daughter in the long jump--took 5th place

Congrats to your girls - they did very well in a big meet. You must be so proud of them - your pictures sure indicate that. Your timing is excellent!
