Pentax To Sell Tokyo HQ, Quit Low-Profit Ops To Lift Corp Value

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Pentax Corp. (7750) plans to sell its Tokyo headquarters and withdraw from less profitable businesses under strategies the camera maker has crafted to block a takeover bid by optical glass manufacturer Hoya Corp. (7741), The Nikkei learned Wednesday.

text of article includes

"On top of this, Pentax will continue to overhaul less profitable
businesses. It will abandon the development of medium-format single-lens
reflex cameras designed for professional photographers and specialize in
digital SLR offerings for new and intermediate users."

It's one of the headlines on: http://www.nni.nikkei.co.jp/

Wow, that is interesting. I tried to find more info in other sources but the only other cite I found was Forbes and they sound like they are citing the nikkei report:

http://www.forbes.com/markets/feeds/...fx3704926.html

"Pentax Corp may be in focus following a report that the digital camera maker plans to sell its Tokyo headquarters and withdraw from less profitable businesses, in a bid to block a takeover bid by optical glass manufacturer Hoya Corp."

To tell the truth, I never thought the 645D was that good an idea since the market for such an expensive camera is very small even though the "cool" factor is very high.

I absolutely agree Tom, tremendous waste or resources for return (where as film it was just an easy (cost) physical upscaling change and some lenses).

After the surprisise immediate success of the K models though..... certailly doesn't mean they won't continue on to a pro level 35mm digital a la the Canon and Nikon 1 series.

Pentax continues on in the financial news over this weekend:

Seems the largest shareholder still favors the deal with Hoya:

This financial news has been noticed by the photography press:

Hoya might be considering hostile takeover:

This article contains more detail on Pentax's current financial situation and plans. According to this article the company is denying plans to sell HQ and the plan requires further growth into the Dslr market:

Couple more:

Pentax looking for a white knight:
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/fd5022b0-018...b5df10621.html

"Pentax said its net profit more than quadrupled over the previous year to Y3.57bn, due to strong demand for its digital single-lens reflex cameras. The camera-maker plans to double its operating profit to Y11.2bn for the year ending March 2010 by focusing on businesses such as cameras and endoscopes."

Not a financial, but a press release the Pentax has released software so that .PEF files will work in Windows Vista:

Pentax is restricted from making any negotiations for partnership or venture agreement with other companies besides HOYA until May 31, 2007. Thus, Pentax describes the mid-term plan as "a strategy under restrictions which can be carried out by Pentax alone." Although some news reported that Pentax is "planning to sell the headquarters," the company denied the speculation, commenting "there is no such plan at the moment."

Good article Oreo, some other favorable points:

"The Imaging System Business Division that sells digital SLR cameras enjoyed favorable sales growth. The Division made operating income of 3.1 billion, coming back to profitability from a 1.2 billion deficit logged in the same period last year.

The company reports that sales of the K10D digital SLR camera especially grew in and outside Japan after its launch in November 2006, among other products. Pentax digital cameras, including compact cameras, sold 3 million units, 300,000 units of which were reportedly SLR models. "

and

"The IS Division that sells digital cameras will focus on digital SLR cameras. Pentax will expand the lines of products from entry to high-end models. The company expects the annual sales of 500,000, 750,000 and 1 million units in FY2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. Regarding the compact digital cameras, the company plans to ensure profitability by focusing on the introduction of models with unique features, instead of increasing the yield. The sales target of the compact digital cameras are 2.5 million, 2.75 million and 3 million units in FY2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. "
