A local shop has one of these for sale. It has no documentation.

It was gray in color with an attached hood. The glass appeared very clean, with no scratches.

Anyone have any idea of the worth of a lens such as this?

Don't know the value of this lens but I've had one for many years and this is one of my two primary lenses for taking pictures of birds.
If you like I can show you a shot of lens on camera and some photos taken with this lens from my Flickr site.

I have the autofocus version of this lens and find it "OK". I paid $102 for it on ebay, but recent ones have gone for far more than I paid.

It may be related, I dont really know, but I have a graySigma 450 f:5.6 that I rescued in a filthy state from a local junk shop. It was autofocus and had what I think was a Minolta mount. It was my first attempt at lens hacking and I was not near ambitious enough choosing only to remove the mount and fit a K mount, I removed the auto focus drive and converted the aperture to a simple manual lever on the side of the lens.

Far from being an expert in these matters I feel this Sigma lens is actually very good especially for birding. (Though I do wish I had thought more before abandoning the auto focus :roll

i had one. non-apo, non-macro, non-Af. photodo rates this one at 1.8 i think.
worse POS lens i ever had. it would deliver at f8 and up but even then i had to do too much PP. i figure a 400mm f5.6 should deliver at f5.6 to be handholdable.
hey, just my experience and my 2
