thanks all, I've been working with Aperture but still very new at real photography; the fireboat was sharpened a bit but would a faster shuttter speed have helped? (That was at 1/180 at 200mm on a tripod with a cable switch).

Also, for pp sharpening, any tips on the best mode to use in CS2 and aperture (radius/ threshold)?

rudy,
i think this is a guided missile detroyer. Aegis class. basically a fast intel and protection vessle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arleigh...yer#References

ruth,
about all you need to do is hit auto levels for your shots. i did that on this one and a tad sharpening. a little burn of the foreground water.

also a good setting for the unsharp mask to get a little sharpening but more contrast is, amount20%, radius50, threshold 0. this is the last thing i do to practically every image i PP. but not all.

Roy, FWIW I am no expert on these ships, but I think the two ships whose hull numbers can be read are Ticonderoga Class guided missle cruisers - the USS San Jacinto, CG 56, (http://navysite.de/cg/cg56.html) and the USS Philippine Sea, CG 58 (http://navysite.de/cg/cg58.html). The Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers (http://www.destroyerhistory.org/cold...mccain_01.html) have an entirely different sillhouette. The first two pictures (labelled "destroyer" and "frigate") are the destroyers.

a little more sharpening and auto levels, with a bit of change to the temperature (the orig was way to blue)

this looks better to me, don't know about the critical eye though....
