This little guy (about the size of a nickel) just sat there in the grass snapping up ants that were walking by as I took his picture.

Hi Tom,

Very nice!

I'm usually looking up at the trees, so I'd definitely miss something like this -- but with the 17 year Cicadas about to emerge, I'll be paying more attention to the ground the next couple of days, and I'll probably mount the macro on the K10 until I get some shots that I like -- hoping to get a series from emergence to fully winged out and ready to boogie -- with millions ready to come out, I should get enough chances. . .:-)

Hi Scott,

I remember when I was in school in southern Wisconsin they would come out of the ground as nasty looking bugs with front claws and they would produce a really neat looking winged insect and leave the empty bodies on the trees.

I also remember they were extremely noisy-don't forget to post the photos.

You know Roger, as I was laying in the grass watching him lap up those big black ants trying to get just the right shot, I started to itch all over, but after the shoot there were no ants on me.

I had a hard time keeping steady at 1/20 sec when I felt there were ants crawling all over me. The SR on the K10D seems to work very well.

Tom, great shot - the dof and sharpness are great - Ronny

a shame you missed him actually getting an ant. that would be too much to ask tho.

I wasn't for the lack of trying Roy, but it was almost impossible to see, he would look at the ant and then it would be gone. At 1/20 sec I am not sure how that would have worked anyway, since I had to slow the speed down to get the DOF I needed because I was so close taking the photo.

Great shot Tom, you nailed that one.

He's a pretty toad! Nicely done with the DOF. Gives me something to think about if I decide to upgrade my macro lens - that Tamron is really sharp.
