found this in the front yard this morning. shell is about 12'', 30cm long.
not very interesting shots but what should i do?? pick it up??? naw

i was a little too slow and it's really fast. this is a 1 inch, 25mm dowel.

Hi Roy,

Nice captures -- I don't mess with snappers, have no desire to pick em up, don't poke sticks at em -- learned my lesson a long long time ago as a kid, when one reached almost half-way around its shell to take a piece out of my hand. I'm satisfied occasionally taking pics from a distance.

scott, i just wanted a pic of it's mouth open. i don't mess with them. i think this is a female out laying eggs. we see a lot of the painted turtles doing the same this time of year. i'd hate for one of these to get a hold of me because that part would probably be missing very soon.

Wow! That's some turtle, and I sure wouldn't want to get around her mouth at all. The pictures are excellent - there's so much more to her than there is to a painted turtle.
