What I think is interesting is that the edge gets sharper at a larger aperture than the center does - very interesting. Looks like you'd want to avoid stopping the lens down all the way - that's pretty soft (both center and side). It's still an impressive lens.

Thanks for posting this (and mentioning before that many lenses are soft at their smallest aperture). I had been often using f22 (smallest aperture) with the Phoenix when I was taking flower macros and couldn't seem to get it right. I've changed to shooting a little wider open and have had much better pictures. This is an important point.

I agree with Harriet, F8 looks the sharpest here but quality stays up there through most of the best range for center sharpness also. This is pretty much where I use my Kiron macro, F8 through F16, so the results are pretty close to what I would have expected.
