As you might have gathered I was having some doubts over this lens as it appeared to be suffering from the same problem as the old 28-200mm that it was replacing.

A combination of being over-critical, combined with 10 Mp pictures, plus a dash of natural pessimism meant that I assumed that I was having problems focussing at the shorter end of the zoom. However, having been reassured by this forum (and another) I actually got off my b*m and did a real test.

As before I pointed the camera at a flower at both 70mm and at 300mm. The camera was set to f8 and the ISO was 100. Below are a couple of 100% crops.

This is the 70mm shot

and this is the 300mm shot

Looking at the 70mm now I think it's OK, certainly doesn't seem really out of focus, maybe a bit soft.

Anyway, I think I'll keep the lens. If nothing else it'll keep me quiet for hours trying to get a sharp macro photo!

Sorry, I am having real problems getting the photos to display so I'll try attaching them.

First the 70mm shot

The 300MM end looks very nice and I think you will find the short end will do well also for many short tele duties. I have had mine for awhile now and I think it is a decent lens all in all. Took me a bit of time to really get the feel for coaxing the best out of it but it is a doable goal with this lens.

Out of curiosity, do you have the APO or non-APO version of this lens?

Hi Jason

I went for the APO version. Unusual for me as I have a bad habit of buying cheap!!!

I figured that having spent so much on the camera and flash there was no point in going for the non-APO.

Don't worry, once you get to know the lens I'm sure you'll like it.

We used to have a forum member here, royce10, who made some amazing photos with that lens.

All it requires is lots and lots of practice.
