for a while my ist ds has been playing up
the flash wouldnt work and the exposures were way off (sometimes), no matter which lens i used (i tried crashes clean the contacts method)
so i took it in to get looked at
the bad news was the main board wasnt working proper and would be near $700 to fix

luckily i had it insured and i was able to make a claim on it
the next bad news was i ran out of petrol (dont ask sigh) on my way to the camera shop and it took a good hour+ out of my day
the good news now is i am the proud owner od a K10D ( i had to pay the difference)

and even though the ds isnt working right it is still usable
i just have to guess (sunny 16 rule) the exposure
this is a test shot with the k10d

this is a shot with the broken ds

and now i have a week off work to play with the k10d too
yipppeeeeeee

AND you HAVE the DIFFERENCE (not to demean the isT's.... but they aren't 10D's)

One word..... PPPLLAAAYY like crazy.... even if you have read the manual front to back STILL PLAY.... and get the firmware upgrade some really cool functionality added there not just odd situation minor fixes.

My Fav.... you can in P mode (WITH UPGRADE) have Ap/Sh on one wheel and EV comp on the other.... a VERY powerful AND LIGHTNING FAST ADJUST combo that makes even my Canon an Nikon friends jealous.... even if just in a functionality if not quality sense.

(Not sure what they ship with now but newest firmware is 1.20) and still likely not reflected in the manual it is so even if 1.20.... see the upgrade docs online.

Good job the DS is broken - just think what sort of pic you could have taken!!

Seriously, though, great shots - both of them. But that eagle stare... WOW!

it is only the exposure that is broken in the ds so i cant use any kind of auto exposure, only manual, so i lost a lot of shots guessing
i could of used an old fashioned light meter
and the flash didnt work but i never used it

Hazza ( i am sure thats what Hayward would be in Aus lol ) i do intend to do the firmware update as soon as i figure out the camera and find the upgrade
thanks

looking forward to playing
lots

And BTW congrats on stepping up to the plate.... instead of just moving on to the K100D as just a DS replacement.....

Pretty darn sure you are going to be very happy with the K10D, and if you ever did consider the 100D, doubt you will regret the added expense at all.... especially once you really start playing with it, and find its little gems of functionality not real well stated in the manual.. and again takes just the playing with on non critical shots to realize.

Oh and here is the fimware upgrade link
http://www.pentaximaging.com/custome...firmId=8793673

Very easy to do if you have a card reader.... put it on the card root dir, start the camera while holding the menu button and just follow the prompts. (And be sure a fresh battery, or one with at least 10 minutes left.... takes a bout 90 sec just safety margin... dies during it you are in big trouble.)

Both great shots, the colours and detail in No.1 is beautiful and yes that Eagle stare is WOW.

Well, that's a great excuse to upgrade! That eagle is awesome, though. Looks like it might be a good excuse to get a light meter and use the DS as a back-up - looks pretty good for a "broken" camera.

It took me a bit of practice to get used to where the controls are on the K10 - while it seemed very familiar, it was enough different (especially the green button's location) that it wasn't a completely natural progression. And having a week off to do nothing but take pictures? Heavenly! Have a great time and post your impressions as you go along.

i am hoping to have both cameras going at once
lol
one with tele lenses one with wide angle and using the K10D's meter

my insurance was part of the house insurance, i can nominate items to be individually insured
i think it was less than $50 a year for the ds for damage, theft and loss
it seemed the prudent thing to do with something as fragile and expensive as a digital camera

i am already coming up with issues due to the differences between the 2 cameras
i will put these in new threads

thanks guys for your comments, wirshes and encouragement
