I was at a friends house this week who had a lovely vase filled with Peacock feathers. The sunlight was reflecting off it through the windows to make these wonderful sparkling highlights. I figured that if I focused softly on the base of the feather with a very shallow DOF, I would get and ever increasing amount of those beautiful rings you get in out-of focus specular highlights.

Came out just as I wanted it to. Very happy with this shot.

EDIT; I've noticed that at "web" resolutions and downsampling, you can't really see the rings as I see them from the orginal raw file. Oh well...still looks kinda pretty:G

EDIT EDIT (:G) 100% crops further down

That is a very creative idea, I like the colors you captured. You are right, downsizing to fit in the forum does not do the image any favors. You probably already know, but using a little unsharp mask after you resize helps some.

Hi attaboy,

If the downsized full image doesn't represent what you want to show well, you can always add a couple of 800x800 pixel full size crops of different portions of the pic.

One thing you didn't mention.... was that done with point AF or was it MF?.... I'm guessing MF, by your phrasing, but just wondering.

That's a great idea. Gonna give it a try.

Don't think it's possible to soft focus using AF, unless of course the AF system was crap, and we all know that the K10D's AF is great!

Here's 3 100% crops, as snostorm suggested, so you can see the effect much better

Cool shot - and the out of focus part is also great.
