I was just advised that Sigma has done a manufacturing run of this lens for ALL mounts including the Pentax mount.

The Sigma EX 70-200mm f/2.8 lens was replaed with the new Sigma EX 70-200mm f/2.8 Macro lens.

There has been lots of complaints about the new MACRO version of this lens.

1. not as sharp as the Sigma EX 70-200mm f/2.8 lens non-macro version
2. not available in Pentax mount.

As a result Sigma has just completed a production run of last years Sigma EX 70-200mm f/2.8 lens version in AL mounts.

How do I know? I ordered mine and it was shipped form Japan 5 days ago.

If you want one of these lenses, get your supplier to check with your importer and see if you can score one.

Cool, I'm saving up for one of these, since a FA* 80-200mm is a little over my head.

Is there any chance there'll be a HSM version for Pentax?

I have no idea what they will do about a Pentax Mount version in HSM.

All I know is they have done a production run of the non-macro version again.

Hi Tom,

It's doubtful -- Sigma has to reverse engineer the protocols for the AF system, and the DA* lenses aren't even out yet -- but will be soon. I think it will be a while before you see any HSM lenses for Pentax from them.

But this is good news -- they should do well selling these since they are the best alternative for this focal length range, and that should (hopefully) encourage them to put more emphasis on their Pentax mount lineup.

I had only 3 minutes experience with the non-macro older version . Good news that Sigma has it back in production now.

While in B&H last yr I took two quick snap shots of a brand new one they want to sell me - I was determined to go all prime anyway.

I took two shots one wide open at 200mm . Result so-so. Took another one at F3.5 just 1/2 stop wide open. I took off quickly. Should have bought this one.

Large file warning:

I have no clue if it is inferior to the FA* version. But it is no slouch at all

Lousy lens. I tried to count the hairs on the guys head, but gave up after 57.458, the rest were to fuzzy. :-)

The shots were a 100% unintentional shot .

If the optics of this zoom is as great as I saw ( and there are numerous +ive reviews re. the Canon's mount), it is a viable alternative together with the almost non-existant FA* zoom and the new DA* (not everyone are for quick action shots). Pentax needs the support of other oems to increase market share. Look no further than Canon when there is such a huge supply of alternative lens supplied by Tokina, Tamron & Sigma.

We look forward to Crash posting some pict somewhere in the Pacific.

Daniel

Don't get me wrong. I was advised that Sigma did ONE production run, not a return to full production of this lens.

When I get the lens in my hot little hands I will shoot off some (ok,... lots) of pics and post the good ones.
