My Previously well behaved Pentax K100 D now no longer will autofocus when button is pushed down halfway nor will it take the shot. LCD screen is ok. It is on AF and has new batteries. All menus were reset to defaults. I need help and ideas on what to try next.

First, check to make sure there is a memory card installed and readable. Next look at the lens and make sure the aperture is set to the 'A' position. If not, or it doesn't have 'A', you will need to change the menu setting, and allow non-'A' lenses.

Also, try reseating the lens by removing it and twisting it back into place. Before placing the lens back on the mount, check to ensure the metal contact pins are not dirty. Make sure you hear the click when you twist the lens back on.
