They are certainly beautiful, and I'm glad that they are coming back. It's interesting about the wasps - I never thought of them as being predators. The weather has been wonderful for the last week - the snow is long gone.

Very interesting & informative series! I'm with Harriet, I never understood the wasp-predator role in the insect kingdom but it definitely makes sense. BTW, what a beautiful shot of that male!

Pity the poor caterpillars.I had mentioned thisin a thread in the close-up forum- perhapsyou might had seen it there. The wasps do not actually eat the caterpillars themselves (the typical definition of a predator); they paralyse them with their stings and place them in their nests to be a living source of foodfor their own larvaethroughout the period of theirdevelopment. Nature is not always kind.
