Things are relatively quiet right now in the local botanical garden, although the squirrels are busy with winter nearing

These guys could be seen everywhere

But, for at least one, his newly-discovered short-cut to food was short-circuited

Winter birds have just begun arriving, including dark eyed juncos

and, there are even a few flowers remaining

I've noticed the same thing at my feeders the last 2-3 weeks. I'm assuming either, or both, of a couple of possibilities: the easy availability of food with fall seeds, etc. and the changeover from the birds that have inhabited the woods around my house all summer. It seems the vast majority of the birds I'm seeing now are denizens of the ground and low weeds & brush around the power line cut in my back yard.

I still have a few cardinals, but even they haven't frequented the feeders of late, making me think the natural availability of food is very high. (During the summer, I was often having to refill two or three times a week.)
