I've always had good luck with Thomas Distributing, but I also note that there's nothing is their description that ascertains that those batteries are fit for low temperature use. It could also be that you drew a bad set. I'd call Thomas and talk to one of their tech people; see if they can find the temp. ratings and range for those batteries.

Well sounds to me like you already found the fix. Don't use the RCR-V3 batteries as the Pentax manual states not to as they are not compatible with the camera. If it works fine with NiMH AA's then that is what I would use.

NiMH is hardly the solution. I am still testing Eneloop about its cold weather performance

Pentax mentioned that the RCRV3 were not compatible mainly on account that the older type of RCRV3 gave out typically 3.8V over the designed voltage of 3V

Actually all NIMH gives only 2.4 V (1.2x2) which is of the lowest voltage threshold of most Pentax dslr. Not much maneuvre room at all.

The newer type of regulated RCRV3 typically gives out 3.1 -3.25 V which is considered to be pretty safe bet. Mine (Juice brand) has an output of 3.1V which is a lot closer to the designed voltage of 3V .

These have been extensively discussed in these two forums
