My friend asks me and I felt this was the best forum to ask. He likes my DS wants to get a Pentax. Circuit City has the Samsung GX10 kit at $679 and the Pentax K10D at $746 (since it is a kit not sure if he gets the rebate).

He has $300 in credit at Circuit City so that is where he will buy.

What would you folks tell um.

Unless he is planning on selling it again soon, I think would get the Samsung (although it may be a good idea the research the warranty and their customer service and repair record before purchase, wouldn't want any nasty surprises later). The cameras are functionally equivalent with only a few things, such as RAW format and menus being significantly different (the Samsung uses the Adobe DNG format for its RAW files). All of the actual hardware is virtually identical.

If the Pentax has a rebate, then get the Pentax, at least it is a "known" commodity.

I bought the GX-10 with no regrets as an upgrade from my DL. If he is a AAA member he can save an additional 10% with a coupon requested on their website.I ended uppaying $575 (they had it for 639.99 atthat time).

I have no experience with the Samsung but I did research the issue of whether or not you got the rebate with a Pentax kit. The answer is yes, when you complete the form you need to include the UPC from the camera body box, whether the kit lens came with it or not does not matter.
