We have a wide range of experience among our members.

Found growing through the mulch at base of Red Maple in my yard. Approx. 3.5" to 4" (8.5 to 10 cm.) in diameter.

I believe I have seen something similar once or twice. I think it is a fungus and will turn black and dissolve after a few days.
