Some action from the King of the Derwent race this afternoon.

Now that is a big steering wheel.

hmmmm, kevlar/mylar sails... and we think * lenses are expensive..
an America's Cup mainsail costs $50,000+ and is good for 30 hours sailing.

nice action shot...Lot of leverage with that wheel! The crew looks like they are enjoying the ride.....For the moment anyway!

Yes it was my Sigma 135-400 zoom.

I took it from the shore, near the John Garrow Light.

Here is the Sydney-Hobart line honours winner beating up the Derwent river towards the finish line.

Thier tacks took them away from from favourite shore spot and the gray clouds made took away any colour.

As it was a beat finish they did not have their colourful and large spinnakers up.

Many yachts from the Sydney and Melbourne race fleets take part in the harbour race and come closer to shore.

phil,

as tight as they are into the wind there's no way they could set a spinnaker. they're about as close hauled as you can get. gawd, i miss my boat..
