I was just looking around at some extra batteries for a k10d.... I found plenty and various prices. I was just wondering what people are using for a spare battery? Where can you find an actual Pentax battery, because I have heard stories of batteries exploding etc from 3rd parties (may be other cameras though...), so what would I be safe in getting?

thanks

Hi FE4,

I've been using two of the Impact batteries for about a year, and haven't had any problems with either.

thanks everyone, those seem like a good battery. Is it even possible to get a Pentax battery anywhere or are they all 3rd party?

You can get the Pentax battery from the same source for $49.95, but note that it is equivalent to/interchangeable withthe Konica-Minolta NP-400, now sold as a Sony battery. B&H has the last of the OEM KM branded batteries for sale at $9.95 (they were $5 for a while) - I have been using these interchangeably between my Pentax andMinolta bodies thattake them. The same Impact battery is sold for both.

The difference in the mAh (this one at 1500 compared to 1700) just means that it won't hold as much of a charge....right? I hope that is the only difference since I had to pull the trigger on 2 of these!
Nice find, and thanks for the tip.

The NP400 (Minolta OEM) is 1500,the Pentax OEM is 1620, and the Impact is 1700. That is the only obvious difference - all are 7.4V. I have use all three interchangably in Minolta and Pentax bodies - I grab whichever is handy when one runs down and I have to make a change. Camera batteries are pretty specific in what they fit into - these don't give amperage, but I wouldn't think any OEM battery would damage any camera that it fits, but cheapie no name ebay specialsmight not be well enough regulated to be safe. Look at the prices of other NP400s - these are a steal - and at this price you can buy 2 (3000mah) for the price of one Impact (1700mah)or 5 (7500mah) for the price of one Pentax (1620mah). Do the math!
