Hello Peter and welcome,
I haven't tried shooting butterflies myself, but in this sort of situation I'd use plenty of diffusion if I had to use flash, I like to shoot macro , and find this approach softens any harsh flash effects. ... Jack.

Post a couple of pictures when you get back. I didn't offer any advice because most of my butterfly pictures are lousy and I love looking at them.
