Ed,

Here are my observations:

The sharpness definitely improves with the smaller apertures. This is not unusual, since at wide open apertures, DoF tends to get very shallow and in the absence of precise focusing, one might see some fuzziness.

From what I can also see, the 16-50 seems overall to produce a slightly sharper image than the 16-45 across most of the f stops. Not surprising since the former is a prime lens. The 16-45 also seems to create a whiter picture (restated, may be the 16-50 has a warmer tone).

Across the image, the 16-50 appears to have uniform sharpness (i.e. the entire plane appears to be in focus).

Hope this helps,

Jay

The DA*16-50 lens you have doeslook like it is sharper than the 16-45. It's not surprising that it's a bit softer at f2.8 - but it doesn't look much softer than the 16-45 at f4 to me. What do you think of it taking pictures of things other than newsprint and wrapping paper? How does it do with people and interiors?
