Hello, I was sent this email quoted below. I have never heard of Schmap, has anyone ?
I am quite chuffed to have my photo chosen, but I wonder if I am selling my soul if I agree ?

:: Schmap: Australia Photo Short-list

Hi Rodney,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has
been short-listed for inclusion in the second edition of
our Schmap Australia Guide, to be published mid-May 2008.

http://www.schmap.com/ **************************

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection
phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse the first edition of our Schmap Australia Guide.

While we offer no payment for publication, many
photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap
Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and
are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a
maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and
link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Sunday, April 27. If you happen
to be reading this message after this date, please still
click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated
frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be
considered for later releases).

Best regards,

Emma Williams,
Managing Editor, Schmap Guides

First, congrats on the selection. The pic has great composition.

Second, why do you think you'd be selling your soul? Does Schmap retain exclusive rights to the photo? I know you'd be giving away the pic but it would serve to get your name out there, which could be a good thing depending on what your longer term goals are.

It is a bit of a conundrum.

EDIT: After going back in and looking through Schmap again, they do a nice job of crediting the photographer. The way they catalog the pics is different, with several under a top one that signifies the nature of that part of the gallery. The pics are small enough even if someone saved it it would be not much else than a thumbnail. Interesting site.

Dennis

Rodney,

I recently received a similar request to use a photo I took while on vacation last year at Jamestown, VA. I could find nothing negative about the company and agreed to its use. The guide containing my photo is set for publication near the end of April, so I haven't seen exactly how they'll use mine, but it would certainly appear from the way others have been used to be a fair usage. So far, they seem legit.

Rodney,

same story here, a small year ago, I had them contact me about a photo on flickr.
I should have asked for a free copy of their guide, they also placed it inbetween a bunch of other pictures, (had to look hard to find it) and added my name. The picture itself links back to the picture on flickr.

Didn't have any problems with them.

Ronny

This is just one more interactive map online.. They have chosen 2 of my pics last year too.. One is for Milano, another one for Verona.. They are really polite.. and nice.. First you get a mail saying that you can agree to your photo be shortlisted for to be chosen, and after, if it has been chosen, you get a confirmation and a link to a web site, where it is posted.. simple.. and I don't mind a t all my photos being used for suche a nice and illustrative purpose..

Rodney,

As I will be visiting 4 countries in Europe starting next month, I decided to download their program. Very good idea and will be using it on my laptop to get myself orientated in each city and to find what I want to see.

I like the whole concept and I don't think it is a bad idea that they use one of your your photos.

They asked to use one of my Maui pics a while back - I was a bit nervous as you are - I read the fine print, looks ok - its a non-exclusive right, so you can sell it to somebody else. I'm sure they would have no problem removing it if you for some reason decided to sell exclusive rights to somebody else...
