I see these in my yard occasionally. This guy and two others were having quite a scrap with each other yesterday.

They are small, about the size of a gold finch. And fast too; couldn't catch any of the fight.

Looks like either a House finch or Purple finch to me.

Yes; Paul is correct.

The House Finch, the Purple Finch and the Cassein's Finch are all very similar. Just subtle differences in their coloration, usually on the breast, which is not very visible in your shot. But definitely a finch.
