For the life of me I cannot identify this bird, I have never seen one before and none of my bird books are any help.

Thanks Tom, no wonder I couldnt find it, its a woodpecker, I was looking in perching birds.

i've got these guys around year round.. they're pretty easy to spot once you recognise their call and their constant pecking..

No question on the ID, but I wish I could get that good of shot of one. I've only seen two or three around here and never close enough to get a quality photo. Nicely done.

I have one that pounds on the metal chimney cap each morning at 6AM and I need to find a way to make it stop.

LOL! Tom - we have one that does the same thing, though not every day, and not usually that early. The first time it happened I thought someone was taking a jackhammer to the house! It's times like that when my hubby starts muttering about double barrels...
