This series came about almost by accident when I went outside this morning to shoot some birds. I had my Phoenix 100-400mm on the camera, and I noticed a new iris had bloomed in my wife's flower bed. I was struck by its color and decided to shoot a few. After I had shot the first one, I realized that the background (the front of my son's silver Nissan) was distracting. The result, however, was a little unusual but not displeasing

I moved 90 degrees to a more traditional background

Then, I decided to try to shoot from a slightly lower angle and a little less zoom

All three shots were taken at 1/400th of a second, f8.0, ISO 160, -0.3 EV. The first two were at 250mm and the third at 210mm. I was struck by the rather dramatic difference in shots #2 & #3 with no other changes being made. All were post processed with identical settings. I was also struck by the overall image quality of the shots from the Phoenix on a shot for which I would normally be using the DA*50-135.

A very pretty flower - and it's interesting to see a long lens used for close-ups (I've done it myself with the A300 - not as long but the same idea). I think I like the second one the best, but all of them are lovely.

Beautiful color. I think I like the 3rd the best just because I like high contrast and the black background.

Tough choice between 2 and 3, Paul. I like the yellow against the dark in #3, but prefer the maroon against the ligter green in #2. Both are very pleasing.
