Every year we have the Louisiana Balloon Championship in Baton Rouge. We have held the Nationals for several years but this year was only Louisiana.

We still had somewhere around 50 competitors this year, and this is the first time I'm had with the K100D Super out there.

These were all taken with the kit lens, as it's currently the widest lens I have.

I didn't bring the tripod, which would have really helped with the balloon glow shots, but a few came out alright.

The weather was hot but beautiful and I was surprised at the number of people out there with their DSLR's and giant lenses. Made me feel bad for the people trying to take pictures with their phones. :G

I tell you though, it's hard to take bad photos of these things.

Here are a few of the ones I think came out good.
Some PP was required, especially on the darker ones.

#1 - This is my uncle's balloon. It's Mardi Gras colors and named Zepherus. Maybe one day I'll take the Pentax for a ride in it.

The Black Daggers are the official U.S. Army Special Operations
Command Parachute Demonstration Team.
This guy brought in the MIA/POW flag.

Nice job - these are always colorful events (has there ever been one without a RE/MAX entry? And who owns the flying molars - dentists?). Talk your uncle into taking you up. I flew around Baton Rouge once with a friend in his rented Cessna - the River and campus should make for some great aerials.

Thanks, Penolta.

The last time my uncle offered to take me up, he said something about heading out around 5:00 am and I lost interest. Not a morning person, me.
One day I'll take him up on his offer to take me up!

And yes, the tooth balloons are owned by a local dentist. They are named The First Molar and The Second Molar.
We didn't have any non-traditional shaped balloons this year, but I guess for competition they may not be as maneuverable. The ones designed for competition are usually the tall, slender ones.

Excellent shots - what a wonderful opportunity. Definitely like your evening/night shots. 5 am isn't bad at all - think of all that wonderful early morning light, along with being up in the air. What an opportunity!
