Hi there,
we installed a bird feeder in a small tree and while there is plenty of other stuff around some birds stopped by and just for fun I mounted a Beroflex 500mm lens on my tripod and tried my luck. This is what I got. I was quite surprised at the result. I still have to practise that and maybe wait for better lighting (sun was behind the birds :sad:, worst case scenario to say so), but I feel there is at least a chance of some nice pics!

Out of curiosity I mounted my Vivitar 2x TC, doubling the focal lenght to a whooping 1000mm. Here's a lucky shot.

I agree, the last two are really surprising considering you are using a 2X TC with a 500mm lens. Do you feel like you are on stake-out?

Thanks for the nice and encouraging comments! How do you like colors/saturation? I ask because I mostly use a TFT monitor and always find it difficult to get the colors right that way. Also my lightweight tripod can't really handle that construction, have to think of a way to stabilize things.

@Goldwinger
Yeah, the problem is, that the Beroflex starts at f/8 and with using the 2x TC we are talking about f/16 here and I don't want to go higher than ISO800 (some of the shots above are ISO1600/3200). I really need a lot of light to get a reasonable shutter speed for 1000mm & the ...hm... unsteady birds.

@mtngal
Hehe - a bit, yes. The Beroflex looks more like a telescope!

Regards,
Th.

Update.

Was an overcast morning but the birds were active at the feeder so I gave it a weak try. Again the 1000mm coming from a Beroflex 500mm + Viv 2x TC.

ISO800, f/16, 1/90s, underexposed and later corrected by 3 f-stops (was the only idea I had for the bad light I had). The final image is at least good enough for forum posting Details are there, colors are a bit cool, getting focus was merely guessing (very dark viewfinder).

I'll have to move my equipment to another area, maybe a local park or so... and then in broad, sunny daylight.

I'll keep you updated when I've got more images. I think while not being a real pro solution this combo might give me some surprising shots.

Have fun!
