This teleconverter has the contacts for SDM. It focuses even at 400mm with my Tokina 80 400mm F4 - 5.6. With the DA* 300mm it will only focus in bright light on a subject with high contrast, but still hunts. I tried with manual focusing but acheiving focus is difficult. What worked best for me was setting line # 34 in the custom menue to "Catch In Focus". You can hold down the shutter release as you focus and the shutter releases when focus is achieved. I went across the street to the park to try it out. Coditions were not good. Total overcast and the sun was fairly low. I feel the IQ of this combination works well considering trhese examples were taken at 1600 ISO. Even was able to catch BIF's (Overcast background is all I had)

Pretty impressive, especially the squirrels.

Like that first one a lot. Seems to work well that way.
