I've been disappointed at both the number and variety of birds in my yard this fall. Many of the summer species left early, and the ones I enjoyed watching last winter haven't arrived (most notably goldfinches and bluebirds). I put up a new feeder in the edge of the woods this weekend and got out this afternoon to see who visited. Mostly it was the familiar cast of characters....tufted titmice

and chickadees

However, a white throated sparrow made an appearance

and I was really glad to see a red bellied woodpecker....the first I have seen in several months

I keep hoping that some of my regulars will be back.
