This month's challenge may be the hardest of any to judge, as there are so many outstanding entries. I hadn't "thought in black and white" in a long time, and had forgotten how compelling such images could be. There is still more than a week left in the month, so anyone who hasn't yet entered might want to give it a whirl. With all the snow and ice (none around here, though), there are plenty of opportunities for black and white images. I, as several others, had a terrible time deciding on an entry, and changed once - I could change again, but won't.

This is a slow period, so I thought I would post a few of mine that I tried, and maybe encourage some others to participate. The goose portrait was my first choice, and I still like it, but both my wife and I decided the ducks were better - the paired pose was as good as it gets, and the light effects on the water give a depth to the photo. I subsequently converted a number of others - the three I liked best are shown after the two previously posted. I really like the caboose. And finally, in keeping with the season, I converted my original greeting from last year.

1 - Canada Goose

3 - Eared Grebe

Grebes are the only birds that do not have a tail - Eared Grebes often thermoregulate by facing away from the sun, raising their posterior feathers to expose the dark skin to the warming solar rays.

6 - Holiday Wish

The birds are:
Roseate Spoonbill
American Flammingo (Phoenicopterus ruber)
Sandhill Crane
The rest are self-explanatory.

How cool! I, too, have been having fun with black and white conversions this month - enough that I'll continue to often change some photographs. I've never done much with it before, but I've always loved others photos. Your pictures here are definitely an inspiration.

Very nice, Penolta. I can't decide between the two train shots. I like the engine for all the details it draws you to look at, but I like the simpleness of the caboose.

And, a Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Penolta, great idea for a thread. So many of us have been playing with black and white this month, trying to choose an image for the challenge. Inevitably, some interesting images are going to be passed over. I've been playing with B&W for portraits. I was going for a look of confusion and unease, created by the shadowy environment
