i just purchased a san disk extreme SD card - 4 gig for my dslr.

i wanted to upgrade from my 2 gig.

when i tried to use the 4 gig it says "memory card error".

why is that?

is there a maximum size you can use only on my camera?

thanks.

Not sure, but is it maybe a high-def one and maybe your camera can't read it?

Just a thought.

On the DS the maximum size is 2 gig, guess it's the same with DL.

Hi igbalfa,

You probably haven't upgrade the firmware.

The 4 GB card is most likely an SDHC as opposed to an SD card. The original firmware for the DL doesn't support SDHC, but 1.02 allowed SDHC use, and 1.03 improved the support.

The firmware and instructions are here:

http://www.pentaximaging.com/support/self-support/

You have to go to the "historic product" section and specify your model. You can just install the 1.03 firmware, it includes all the upgrades of v 1.02. The most important thing about firmware updates is to follow the instructions implicitly -- do not take ANY shortcuts, and make doubly sure that you have fresh batteries or at least fully charged ones.

thanks scott.

i just updated the firmware.

no issues and now i can use my 4 gig SDHC card.

had a few questions for you:

1. what is the difference between a SDHC and a SD card?

2. what is the capacity that my 4 gig SDHC card can hold in my *ist DL at the highest photo settings? it just says 999 so i am assuming the the camera does not show over 999 because when i keep taking pictures it still shows 999.

thanks.

Hi igbalfa,

That was fast. . .
Congrats on a successful firmware update! It's kind of a scary process, but the benefits are worthwhile.

I don't know the technical details, but in SDHC, the HC stands for High Capacity. SDHC capable devices can use SD, but not the other way around necessarily. I assume a different protocol is used to read and write the data. Obviously the form factor is the same for both. BTW, older SD card readers won't work with SDHC, so realize this when you try to transfer the pics to your computer. Hopefully you got one of the combo deals where a SDHC card reader was included, if not, they are available pretty inexpensively.

I get about 350 highest quality jpegs from my 1GB SD cards with my DS (same sensor as your DL) so I assume that 4GB will give you about 1300-1500+ highest quality 6MP jpegs. The counter topping out at 999 is probably because the camera was designed before the larger capacity SDHC was developed, so the Pentax designers didn't allow having room for more than 3 digits for shots remaining on the card.

thanks for the help and the reply scott.

not a big deal that the counter does not go past 999.

i just wanted to make sure that if it did go past 999 - how i could fix it.

Using firmware v2.02 on my *istDS it is reading my 4GB, 8GB and 16GB cards.

Update the firmware and all will be OK.
