As someone who does shoot sports and as we are generally working with pretty shallow dof having the ability to select the focus point so that it is on the face of the subject and track them is helpful so the more the merrier, however it is not only the number that is important but the accuracy of them as well. Generally the centre point is the most accurate so if you are not blessed by a camera that has high performance cross sensors at other positions they might not be the best to use depending on the lens.
