No that's the search engine keying on "*ist" which also covers the 35mm film camera made by Pentax with the same name.

Default How not to name a camera

> ...search engine keying on "*ist" ...

Yet another dumb thing about that product name.
It confuses search engines. Way to go Pentax.

If you search for "*istD" on Ebay, for example (with or
without the quotes, or even specifying ExactPhase) ,
you get an error:
"eBay does not permit wildcard (*) searches containing
fewer than 2 letters. Please enter more letters.
"

On other engines, it is treated as a wildcard, and you
get tons of useless hits.

In most cases, you can spend tens of minutes figuring
out how to get the search to work properly, but most
buyers won't bother. They'll just buy a camera that has
a name/model they can actually pronounce; a name
they can actually find at their favorite .com.

Disclaimer: I don't advocate bidding for new dSLRs and
hi-end digicams on eBay. Far too many of those auctions
are frauds, perpetrated with hijacked accounts. Until
eBay takes some visible steps to fix it, avoid these types
of products, plus plasma TVs, LCD monitors, etc.

I agree with Boundless on the dumb name. Not only do I not know how to pronounce it, I have seen the ads stating the 35mm film *ist as "*ist-Date" - someone with bad eyesight might think they are getting the "*ist-D" (digital).

It may or may not be a dumb name but to help with search engine searches leave out the *. Just type pentax ist d and you can find all the info you want on the camera including sites that compare prices from vendors. To pronounce the name you say the word is and add the t sound. On the Pentax web site there is a promotonal video of the camera and the name is pronounce on that.
I have both the digital and film ist. I think they are both great cameras and offer great features and values for thier price. I don't think the name will hurt sales a whole lot.
