These guys are always up for having their picture taken, unlike the otter that ran across the yard so fast, I couldn't even get my camera turned on in time.

Very nice pictures. I can never remember how to tell a hairy woodpecker from a downy woodpecker. Which is this guy, and how do you tell?

I believe this is a Male Downy Woodpecker because of its size but his should help.

Hi mtnman,

The Downy is a bit smaller, but the easiest way to tell is that the Hairy has a significantly longer bill -- usually almost equal to the length of the head from front to back. The Downy's bill is closer to half the length in relation to its head.

I've only got a couple of shots of a single Hairy, but literally thousands of Downy shots, so at least around here, the Downy is overwhelmingly more common.
