Default Shore Birds at Hatchery

Other than Killdeer and an occasional Least Sandpiper, shorebirds are not something we see too often in our mountains. So, this morning, I was more than a little surprised to see a recently-drained fish hatchery pond covered with unfamiliar visitors...just in this shot a Greater Yellowlegs, two Lesser Yellowlegs, and a Stilt Sandpiper

All were first-time shots for me. Also new was a Short-billed Dowitcher (Greater Yellowlegs in the foreground)

Another bird I saw for the first time was a Spotted Sandpiper

Finally, a closer look at a Greater Yellowlegs

Paul

Great shots Paul. I'm nt much of a birder, but I know others who are, and I understand how exciting it is to see a new bird, or in your case, several new birds. Congrats.

Nice selection, Paul. It can be hard to tell the two Yellowlegs apart without a size comparison, so No 1 is a very useful shot. Thanks for posting it. In number 2, however, the Yellowlegs is smaller than the Dowitcher, so it must be a Lesser rather than a Greater.
