Default Flint Rock & Blue Hole

Had a day off yesterday, and some time to go hiking without the responsibility of leading others. So here are a few random shots from a hike up Flint Rock and a quick stop at Blue Hole.

It was a great day for small butterflies, despite the wind. Here are two - a Duskywing visiting a Catawba Rhododendron, and an Orange Sulphur visiting a Bowman's Root:

There was a lot in bloom, including Mountain Laurel (I like the buds as much as the blooms), and Galax (smells like skunk in the bright sun):

Not sure why it's called Flint Rock - it's mostly sandstone! But there are some fine views:

The Table Mountain Pines at the top have tough cones:

On the way back down, we stopped at Blue Hole - a series of at least 5 waterfalls. The moss was really lush after all our recent rains:

It was much too sunny for a decent photo of any of the falls. This is the most shaded of the group, and it's still way too bright!

My two hiking buddies were a bit tired after about 8 miles:

Great series Mole,

that moth and butterfly are great but I really like that spoonwood, hadn't seen it before and love those flowers/buds.

got me so far to search for it on line, might have been a great addition to the garden hadn't it been so toxic.

Cheers

Ronny

[edit]
that 5th shot, is a stunning view, magnificent moss shot, and waterfall, you even make me jealous of your hiking buddies.

Mole,

Another nice series. The Orange Sulphur is my favorite. They are hard to photograph as they don't sit still long. I also like the dreamy shot through the grass.

You should be working for the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. Your pictures are great advertisements for the state.

What lenses do you carry when you hike?

great shots!!
sounds like you need a ND filter..
don't go above or below a hoya HMC.. hoya sells about 5 different filter/quality models.. the HMC beats just about anything at any price.
