Default Loon Family

Here are the parents with the first hatchling out for a swim, the other is still on the nest waiting to get stronger.

Hi Tom,

Your Loon shots are remarkable!!!

I don't get many chances, as they are just pretty much passing through -- but the times I've had a shot at them, exposure is a nightmare with the stark white on black. The white areas just stick out their tongues and say " sorry dude, but I'm going to blow out no matter what you do", and the black areas just dare you to get any detail.

As far as I'm concerned a good Loon shot is a great one -- but yours have been exceptional.

Thanks everyone, the DR on Loons is about as bad as it gets and the only way to make it work with digital is to wait until the green/blue starts to show in the bright sun, which then allows you to keep the whites from blowing out.

That keeps your options down and a mobile platform such as a stable boat really helps so you can pick your angle on the sun.

Tom - you make it sound (and look) so easy - but I know it isn't!! Thanks for the advice as well as the lovely "family portrait."

Tom,

Beautiful Loon pictures you have been posting.

I did manage to get my first usable Loon shot Memorial Day weekend but it was hand held from my moving boat and the Loon was going away from me. I agree with everyone that they are indeed hard birds to capture well. You my friend have done so!
