Default Rainy Roan Mountain

Headed back to nearby Roan Mountain yesterday. The forecast was clearing, but the weather did not! But any day in the mountains is a great day, and, as the old saying goes, "there's no bad weather, just bad clothing!" Could not take a lot of shots, as the camera spent most of the time under my raincoat. But there were some fine discoveries. First, here's the only view of blue sky all day:

The main purpose of this trip was to check on a rare plant. Gray's Lily is only found in the southern highlands, and only in a few places. Roan Mt is one of the best spots for this lovely flower. Peak bloom is usually late June or early July. Here are several views - tell me which you like best!

Lots of other plants were blooming - thanks to all the good rain! Here is a member of the mint family that I have not yet keyed out. Have never seen it elsewhere than Roan.

Inidan Pipes also in full bloom - this is a rather strange plant - flowering but no chlorophyll...

Rain in the mountains is also great for ferns and fungus. Here is a Maidenhair fern, and two "fun guys."

Not much wildlife activity in the downpours, but raindrops sure do make the spider webs look pretty:

Hope you enjoy this quick view of one of my favorite East Tennessee places. Please give me any suggestions for improvement.

PS - I will be gone "out on the trail" for most of the rest of this week, and will be away from electronics and thus unable to respond to any comments until Saturday.

thanks for the great pictures -- Roan is one my favorite places to be. It is sometimes hard to find a clear day at that altitude.

Mole,

More great pictures! #1 of the lily is the one I like best.

The last mushroom is wonderful. If I ate it would I die? Nice shots of the wet webs as well.

I am curious what the elevation of Roan Mt. is and how long to hike to the top?

It looks like your sensor is getting some dust on it that will need some attention soon. That's the only thing I dislike about digital SLR's. I am always fighting with the dust no matter how careful I am.
